There are now only five months to go until COP26 is hosted in Glasgow, a significant milestone globally and for Scotland on climate action and ambition. COP26 is set to be one of the most important climate conferences in our lifetime and the most significant since the Paris Agreement in 2015.
It is expected to attract around 30,000 delegates and approximately 190 world leaders, alongside climate experts and campaigners to come to a new agreement on coordinated action and leadership which ensures we protect our planet from the effects of climate change and bring about solutions to the dramatic effects we are already having on the planet and the resources it provides for our survival.
We now have just one decade to halve our global greenhouse gas emissions to stay on track to limit warming of the planet to 1.5° degrees in line with the Paris agreement. That is no small task, but neither is it insurmountable and Scotland has a vital role to play in its contribution to cutting those global greenhouse gas emissions.
This presents a significant and important opportunity to showcase Scotland as a global leader in sustainable and inclusive economic development and to showcase our expertise in climate change solutions. Without any doubt businesses are critical to a successful COP26 in Glasgow. Your action is fundamental to reaching net zero emissions globally and in Scotland, where the activity your company undertakes results in no net impact on the climate from greenhouse gases. Net Zero is the point at which the total amount of global greenhouse gas emissions equal or become less than the total amount of emissions removed from the environment, across all sectors. We want to ensure all the opportunities are realised and we deliver a just transition to net zero in Scotland.
Scottish Enterprise aims to use COP26 as a catalyst to inspire Scottish businesses to go further and faster towards a net zero transition, attract new capital investment, showcase Scotland as a world class business location to locate green projects and promote Scottish net zero solutions to the world.
The United Nations global campaign ‘Race to Zero’ ahead ofCOP26 aims to do just that, driving leadership and support from businesses to build momentum towards a shift to a decarbonised economy ahead of COP26. The campaign is one of the practical ways businesses can demonstrate their ambition and commitment ahead of COP, by pledging to become net zero, joining the thousands of other businesses globally who have already joined the campaign.
We want to support our businesses to be global leaders in the net zero transition and protection of our planet; bringing international inward investment opportunities; the creation of green jobs and economic growth for Scotland looking towards 2045 to reach Scotland’s net zero ambitions.
Scottish Enterprise will have a virtual stand during the conference with colleagues on hand to answer your questions on COP26, net zero transition and direct you to support and tools available. So, come visit our stand, share your ideas, and tell us what your business is doing to support the transition to net zero or find out more on how your company can be part of this important milestone and legacy for Scotland.
